Mars Sign Calculator

Your Mars sign is the zodiac sign that held Mars at the moment you were born. The calculation gives the degree, the house, whether Mars was direct or retrograde, and its aspects within the natal orbs. Start with those facts, then read the interpretation as a set of themes to test.

Swiss Ephemeris Tropical zodiac, Placidus houses Motion and aspects shown

Enter your birth date, the most reliable time you have and your birthplace. The result shows Mars by sign and degree, its house, its motion and every aspect it makes within the natal orbs. The calculation comes first; the reading is built on it.

What to look for in your result

  • The sign and degree of Mars.
  • Whether Mars was direct or retrograde at birth, with its daily motion.
  • The house, which depends on the birth time.
  • The aspects Mars makes and the orb of each, tightest first.

Mars is read for how effort is applied. Where that shows, and what modifies it, comes from the house and the aspects, not from the sign alone.

A worked example

BodyPositionHouseMotion
Mars3°28′ Libra7direct, 0.65°/day

Demonstration birth: 1991-09-06 at 18:30 local time, Kyiv, Ukraine (50.4501° N, 30.5234° E), Europe/Kyiv at UTC+3, so 1991-09-06 15:30 UTC. Tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, Swiss Ephemeris 2.10.03. Full result and settings on How to verify your birth chart.

In the demonstration chart Mars is at 3°28′ Libra in house 7, direct at 0.65°/day. It is 3.5° from the nearest sign boundary, further than it moves in a day, so no birth time on this date would change the sign. The house is a different matter: Mars sits 10.3° from the cusp of house 8, and the cusps move with the birth time.

Aspects to Mars within the natal orbs (conjunction 8°, sextile 6°, square 8°, trine 8°, opposition 8°), tightest first:

AspectWithOrb
SextileChiron1.78°
TrineLilith (osculating apogee)2.35°
TrineSaturn2.62°
SquareUranus6.44°

The tightest contact is the sextile with Chiron at 1.78°, against an allowed orb of 6° for that aspect. Since Chiron moves 0.10°/day and Mars 0.65°/day, their separation changes by up to 0.55° across a day. The contact therefore holds at any birth time on this date.

How Mars is read

In astrology Mars is usually read as how a person applies effort, pursues what they want and responds to conflict. The sign gives the style, the house the area of life where it tends to show, and the aspects the other factors that modify it. These are conventional reading cues, not predictions of behaviour.

Mars signA conventional reading cue
AriesDirect effort that starts quickly
TaurusSteady, persistent effort at its own pace
GeminiEffort spread across several interests at once
CancerEffort that protects and responds to mood
LeoConfident, visible effort with pride in the result
VirgoCareful, methodical effort with attention to detail
LibraEffort that seeks agreement and a fair contest
ScorpioFocused, private effort that persists
SagittariusEnergetic effort aimed at a distant goal
CapricornDisciplined effort organised around a plan
AquariusIndependent effort on unconventional lines
PiscesEffort that flows around obstacles rather than through them

An example reading of the demonstration Mars, done as convention rather than forecast: Mars in Libra is associated with “effort that seeks agreement and a fair contest”; house 7 is where that effort would be most visible; the sextile with Chiron at 1.78° names the factor that most modifies it. Each of these is a theme to check against experience, not a statement about what this person does or will do.

What birth-time uncertainty changes

Mars usually spends several weeks in a sign, longer when it is retrograde, so the date alone settles the sign except on a day when Mars crosses a boundary. The house depends on the time and place, and Mars can change house without the sign changing.

Aspects to the slow bodies are usually settled by the date. Aspects to the Moon are not: the Moon moves up to about 15° a day (14.60°/day in the demonstration chart), so a contact between the Moon and Mars can fall inside or outside its orb depending on the hour. If your birth time is unknown, keep the house and the Moon contacts marked as uncertain rather than presenting them as confirmed. See what an unknown birth time changes.

Questions

Does my Mars sign say how I will behave?

No. The chart gives a calculated position, and the reading attaches conventional themes to it. NatalChart.AI presents those themes as questions to test against your own experience, not as a statement of how you act or will act.

What does a natal Mars retrograde mean?

It records that Mars appeared to move backwards against the zodiac at birth; NatalChart.AI takes the flag from the calculated motion. Astrologers often read it as effort turned inward or applied indirectly. It changes neither the sign nor the house, and a natal retrograde is unrelated to whether Mars is retrograde today.

Why is my Mars in a different house on another site?

Compare the house system and the birth time first. NatalChart.AI uses Placidus; a whole-sign or equal-house tool can give another house for the same degree, and Mars close to a cusp changes house with a small change in the time.
