Retrograde Planets in Your Natal Chart

What retrograde means, what each retrograde planet tends to bring, and how NatalChart.AI marks it in your chart with Swiss Ephemeris precision.

What retrograde actually is

Retrograde is the apparent backward motion of a planet as seen from Earth. Nothing in the planet’s actual orbit reverses — it’s an optical effect of relative orbital speeds. From Earth, it looks like the planet pauses (its “station”), moves backward through the zodiac for a window, pauses again, and resumes forward motion.

Astrology reads retrograde as a slowing or interiorising of the planet’s themes. Mercury retrograde isn’t “Mercury broken” — it’s Mercury inward, revising and reconsidering rather than racing forward.

Each retrograde planet, briefly

PlanetRetrograde frequencyNatal flavour
Mercury3× per year, ~3 weeks eachOften shows up as a more reflective, internalised mind — second-guesses on the way to good decisions. Many writers, editors and lifelong learners have natal Mercury retrograde.
VenusOnce every ~18 months, ~40 daysOften a more private relationship to value and affection. The expression of love is paced or considered rather than effusive.
MarsOnce every ~2 years, ~60–80 daysDrive that turns inward before it turns outward. Tends to build conviction privately, then act decisively.
JupiterOnce a year, ~4 monthsOften a quieter expansion — meaning is found through interior exploration rather than outer big gestures.
SaturnOnce a year, ~4.5 monthsAn internal relationship with structure. Often shows up as a high inner standard rather than externally imposed authority.
UranusOnce a year, ~5 monthsAn interior current of disruption and originality. Innovation often shows up after a slow private arc.
NeptuneOnce a year, ~5 monthsA more inward, dreaming Neptune. Imagination and longing run the inner life, sometimes quietly out of view.
PlutoOnce a year, ~5–6 monthsA deep internal pulse of transformation. Power often works underneath the visible life rather than in plain sight.

Natal retrograde vs transit retrograde

Two different things share the word “retrograde”:

  • Natal retrograde — the planet was retrograde at the moment of your birth. This becomes a permanent quality of that planet in your chart.
  • Transit retrograde — the planet is currently retrograde in real time, regardless of your chart. This is what people usually mean when they say “Mercury is retrograde right now.”

NatalChart.AI computes both. Natal retrogrades appear in your chart with a marker; current transit retrogrades appear in the live transit view with their exact stations and impact on your natal chart.

How chart-grounded AI reads retrogrades

Each retrograde body in your chart is in the structured payload sent to the AI. The model is constrained to only mention retrogrades that are actually present, and explains them in context with the planet’s sign and house. See Chart-Locked AI Reading.

Frequently asked questions

What does retrograde actually mean?

Retrograde is the apparent backward motion of a planet from Earth's perspective. The planet isn't really going backward — it's an optical effect of the relative orbital speeds. Astrology reads retrograde as a slowing or interiorising of that planet's themes.

Do the Sun and Moon go retrograde?

No. The Sun and Moon never appear to move backward from Earth's perspective, so they're never retrograde. Every other classical planet (Mercury through Pluto) does.

Is natal retrograde a 'bad' placement?

No. It's a quality, not a verdict. A natal retrograde planet tends to express more inwardly or reflectively. Many highly capable people have natal retrogrades; the placement asks for an internal route to the planet's themes.

How does NatalChart.AI compute retrograde?

Swiss Ephemeris reports each planet's longitudinal speed at your birth moment. Negative speed = retrograde. NatalChart.AI marks every retrograde planet in your chart, and the AI explains its retrograde status in plain language alongside its sign and house.

What about Mercury retrograde periods?

Mercury goes retrograde three times a year for about three weeks each time. NatalChart.AI tracks these as transits and surfaces them in the live transit reading. The reading explains how the current Mercury retrograde lands on your natal chart specifically — not generic horoscope text.
