Venus Sign Calculator

Your Venus sign is the zodiac sign that held Venus at the moment of your birth. The calculation also gives the degree, the house, whether Venus was direct or retrograde, and its aspects to the other bodies of the chart.

Swiss Ephemeris Tropical zodiac, Placidus houses Motion and aspects shown

Enter your birth date, the most reliable time you have and your birthplace. The result shows Venus by sign and degree, its house, its motion and every aspect it makes within the natal orbs, so the sign is the start of the answer rather than the whole of it.

What to look for in your result

  • The sign and degree of Venus.
  • Whether Venus was direct or retrograde at birth, with its daily motion.
  • The house, which depends on the birth time.
  • The aspects Venus makes and the orb of each, tightest first.

A Venus sign on its own says little about a chart. The house and the aspects give it context.

A worked example

BodyPositionHouseMotion
Venus21°54′ Leo7retrograde, 0.27°/day

Demonstration birth: 1991-09-06 at 18:30 local time, Kyiv, Ukraine (50.4501° N, 30.5234° E), Europe/Kyiv at UTC+3, so 1991-09-06 15:30 UTC. Tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, Swiss Ephemeris 2.10.03. Full result and settings on How to verify your birth chart.

In the demonstration chart Venus is at 21°54′ Leo in house 7, retrograde at 0.27°/day. It is 8.1° from the nearest sign boundary, further than it moves in a day, so no birth time on this date would change the sign. The house is a different matter: Venus sits 6.9° from the cusp of house 7, and the cusps move with the birth time.

Aspects to Venus within the natal orbs (conjunction 8°, sextile 6°, square 8°, trine 8°, opposition 8°), tightest first:

AspectWithOrb
ConjunctionMoon2.88°
ConjunctionMercury3.70°
SquarePluto3.90°
SextilePallas5.87°
ConjunctionJupiter6.90°

The tightest contact is the conjunction with the Moon at 2.88°, against an allowed orb of 8° for that aspect. Since the Moon moves 14.60°/day and Venus 0.27°/day, their separation changes by up to 14.86° across a day. On this date the contact may therefore depend on the birth time, so it should be read with the time in view.

An example question to ask once your own chart is open: “What does Venus retrograde in Leo in house 7 suggest about the way I form attachments?” A good answer cites the placement and the aspects it rests on.

How Venus is read

In astrology Venus is usually read as what a person values and enjoys, and how they draw close to others. The sign gives the style, the house the area of life where it tends to show, and the aspects the other factors that colour it. These are conventional reading cues, not measured traits.

Venus signA conventional reading cue
AriesAttraction that moves first and openly
TaurusSteady attachment and comfort in the tangible
GeminiAffection through conversation and variety
CancerCloseness, care and a protective bond
LeoWarm, visible affection and pride in the bond
VirgoCare shown through practical attention
LibraHarmony, courtesy and shared decisions
ScorpioDeep, private attachment and loyalty
SagittariusAffection with room to explore
CapricornCommitment built slowly and kept
AquariusFriendship first and independence within the bond
PiscesEmpathy, idealism and soft boundaries

For the demonstration chart the cue for Venus in Leo would be “warm, visible affection and pride in the bond”, read together with the retrograde motion, house 7 and the aspects above. A one-line description is a starting point for questions, not a conclusion about a person.

What birth-time uncertainty changes

Venus is one of the faster bodies, yet it still spends weeks, sometimes months, in each sign, so the date alone usually settles the sign; only on a day when Venus crosses a boundary does the time decide it. The house is different: house cusps depend on the time and place, and Venus can change house without the sign changing.

Aspects to the slow bodies are usually settled by the date. Aspects to the Moon are not: the Moon moves up to about 15° a day (14.60°/day in the demonstration chart), so a contact between the Moon and Venus can fall inside or outside its orb depending on the hour. If your birth time is unknown, keep the house and the Moon contacts marked as uncertain rather than presenting them as confirmed. See what an unknown birth time changes.

Questions

What does Venus retrograde in a birth chart mean?

It records that Venus appeared to move backwards against the zodiac at the moment of birth; NatalChart.AI takes the flag from the calculated motion. In astrology a natal retrograde Venus is often read as a more inward or reconsidered approach to the themes of Venus. That is a reading convention, and it changes neither the sign nor the house.

Can I find my Venus sign without a birth time?

On most dates, yes: Venus usually spends several weeks in a sign, so the date alone settles it. On a day when Venus crosses a sign boundary the time decides, and the house always needs a time. If the time is unknown, treat the house and any aspect to the Moon as unconfirmed.

Why does another calculator show a different Venus sign?

Compare the date, the time with its timezone offset and the zodiac before comparing interpretations. NatalChart.AI uses the tropical zodiac; a tool set to a sidereal zodiac places most bodies about one sign earlier.
