Enter your birth date, the most reliable time you have and your birthplace. The chart shows Mercury with its sign and degree, its house, its motion at the birth moment and its aspects with their orbs.
What to look for in your result
- The sign and degree of Mercury.
- The motion column: direct or retrograde, with the daily speed.
- Its house, which depends on the birth time and place.
- The aspects involving Mercury and their orbs.

Demonstration birth: 1991-09-06 at 18:30 local time, Kyiv, Ukraine (50.4501° N, 30.5234° E), Europe/Kyiv at UTC+3, so 1991-09-06 15:30 UTC. Tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, Swiss Ephemeris 2.10.03. Full result and settings on How to verify your birth chart.
Here Mercury is at 25°36′ Leo, 17.9° from the Sun at 13°33′ Virgo, in the sign next to the Sun sign. It is direct, moving 0.84° a day, and 4.4° from the nearest sign boundary, so no realistic error in the birth time changes its sign in this chart. The house is different: house 7 depends on the time and place. The tightest contact is a conjunction to Jupiter with an orb of 3.20°.
When natal Mercury is retrograde, the same row reads retrograde and the speed shown is the backward rate. A speed close to zero means the birth fell near a station, the day Mercury changes direction, and then the flag itself can depend on the hour.
Natal retrograde and the current retrograde period
Two different things share the name. Natal Mercury retrograde means Mercury was moving backwards through the zodiac at your birth moment; it is a fixed feature of your chart and never changes. A Mercury retrograde period is the current sky: Mercury turns retrograde several times a year for a few weeks at a time, and that applies to everyone at once.
A direct natal Mercury stays direct during a retrograde period, and a retrograde natal Mercury does not turn direct when the period ends. What a current period may relate to in your chart is a transit question, read against your natal positions. The current dates are on Mercury retrograde dates.
How Mercury signs are read
In astrology, Mercury is often used to discuss how a person gathers information, thinks and communicates. The table gives conventional reading cues, not measured traits.
| Mercury sign | A conventional reading cue |
|---|---|
| Aries | Quick, direct statements |
| Taurus | Deliberate, practical thinking |
| Gemini | Curiosity and a range of interests |
| Cancer | Memory and thinking shaped by feeling |
| Leo | Confident, expressive communication |
| Virgo | Precision and attention to detail |
| Libra | Weighing the sides before deciding |
| Scorpio | Probing, private thinking |
| Sagittarius | Broad views and large questions |
| Capricorn | Structured, goal-directed thinking |
| Aquarius | Independent, systematic ideas |
| Pisces | Impressions, intuition and imagery |
Read the sign together with the house, the motion and the aspects. A retrograde Mercury is read as a modifier of the same placement, not as a separate result. See what each planet stands for.
Settings and limitations
The position comes from the Swiss Ephemeris in the tropical zodiac; the house is a Placidus house; the aspects use the natal orbs: conjunction 8°, sextile 6°, square 8°, trine 8°, opposition 8°. There is no house-system or zodiac switch. A tool set to a sidereal zodiac will differ by about 24 degrees, which can change the sign.
Mercury moves through a sign over weeks, so the birth time changes its sign only when it is within a fraction of a degree of a boundary. The house always depends on the time and place, and the rate at which the cusps move depends on the place, the date and the sign rising. If no time is entered, the moment used is an assumption, and the house is an assumption with it. See what a chart without birth time can show.
Questions
Is my Mercury sign the same as my Sun sign?
Often, but not always. Mercury stays close to the Sun, so it is in your Sun sign or in the sign before or after it. The chart shows which.
Was Mercury retrograde when I was born?
Your chart shows the motion next to the position: retrograde or direct, with the daily speed. The flag is read from the motion at your birth moment. A birth within hours of a station, the day Mercury changes direction, needs a reliable time before the flag is treated as settled.
Does the current Mercury retrograde change my natal Mercury?
No. The natal position and its retrograde flag are fixed by the birth moment. A current retrograde period is a transit that everyone shares for a few weeks; the dates page lists the current periods.
