Use your birth time when you know it. If you do not, keep a sign-boundary question open until it has been checked across the possible time interval. NatalChart.AI calculates the Moon for the one moment you enter; it does not calculate a range of signs across an interval, so that check stays with you.
What to look for in your result
- The Moon’s sign and degree for the entered time.
- Its house when the birth time is sufficiently reliable.
- The aspects involving the Moon and their orbs.
- Any assumptions or uncertainty attached to the result.
An exact-looking number can still come from an assumed time. Check the input before treating the displayed degree as your birth position.
A worked example
| Body | Position | House | Motion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moon | 19°01′ Leo | 7 | direct, 14.60°/day |
Aspects involving the Moon in the same chart, tightest first:
| Aspect | With | Orb |
|---|---|---|
| Square | Pluto | 1.02° |
| Conjunction | Venus | 2.88° |
| Sextile | Pallas | 2.99° |
| Conjunction | Vesta | 6.11° |
| Conjunction | Mercury | 6.58° |
| Square | Ceres | 7.95° |
Demonstration birth: 1991-09-06 at 18:30 local time, Kyiv, Ukraine (50.4501° N, 30.5234° E), Europe/Kyiv at UTC+3, so 1991-09-06 15:30 UTC. Tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, Swiss Ephemeris 2.10.03. Full result and settings on How to verify your birth chart.
Here the Moon is at 19°01′ Leo, 11.0° from the nearest sign boundary, and moving 14.60° a day, which is close to the fast end of its range. A small error in the recorded time would not change the sign in this chart. It would still move the degree, and with it every orb: the tightest contact, a square to Pluto with an orb of 1.02°, shifts by about 0.61° for each hour of error. A larger error could also change the house.
How Moon signs are read
In astrology, the Moon is often used to discuss familiar responses, comfort and inner rhythms. The table gives symbolic prompts, not diagnoses or predictions.
| Moon sign | A topic to explore |
|---|---|
| Aries | The impulse to respond immediately |
| Taurus | Familiarity and steadiness |
| Gemini | Naming and discussing a feeling |
| Cancer | Care, belonging and protection |
| Leo | Warmth and expression |
| Virgo | Practical care and order |
| Libra | Reciprocity and harmony |
| Scorpio | Trust and emotional depth |
| Sagittarius | Perspective and room to move |
| Capricorn | Responsibility and self-containment |
| Aquarius | Distance and a wider perspective |
| Pisces | Sensitivity and imagination |
Read the sign alongside the Moon’s aspects and, where the time is known, its house.
Settings behind the result
The position comes from the Swiss Ephemeris in the tropical zodiac. The house is a Placidus house, and the aspects use the natal orbs: conjunction 8°, sextile 6°, square 8°, trine 8°, opposition 8°. There is no house-system or zodiac switch, so compare another tool only after matching those settings; a tool set to a sidereal zodiac will differ by about 24 degrees, which can change the sign.
When a date is not enough
A Moon sign may remain unchanged throughout a birth date, but that must be checked rather than assumed. If a sign change falls inside your possible birth-time interval, more than one answer remains possible.
The Moon moves up to about 15° a day, about half a degree an hour. Without a known time, do not describe the Moon’s exact degree, house or a tight aspect as certain. A noon calculation represents noon, not the entire day: if no time is entered, the moment used is an assumption, and everything derived from it inherits that assumption. Questions
Do I always need the time for the Moon sign?
Not always for the sign, but the interval must be checked when the time is missing. The time is needed for a precise position, for the house and for the orbs of the aspects.
Why is my Moon sign different from my Sun sign?
The Sun and Moon occupy different positions in the chart. Their signs need not be the same.
What does a noon result mean?
It shows the Moon for that selected moment. It does not establish whether the sign stayed unchanged throughout your possible birth-time interval.
