Chart Ruler Calculator

Different traditions assign different rulers to Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces. The convention needs to be stated before the result can be understood.

NatalChart.AI uses the modern assignments in the table below. The chart does not label a chart ruler as a separate field: you read the Ascendant sign, take its ruler from the table, and then look at that planet’s own sign, house and aspects, which the chart does show.

The rulership conventions

The table explains alternative conventions. It does not mean that every calculator displays or weights both; NatalChart.AI applies the modern column and shows the traditional one here for comparison only.

A worked example

The demonstration Ascendant is at 14°59′ Aquarius. In the modern table Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, so the chart ruler is Uranus; the traditional table would name Saturn instead. The position, house and motion of Uranus in the same chart:

For comparison, the traditional ruler Saturn stands at 0°51′ Aquarius in house 12, retrograde. Which of the two you read is a matter of convention; the positions themselves are the same either way.

The Ascendant here sits 15.0° from a sign boundary, so a small error in the recorded time would not change the rising sign, and so would not change the ruler. It would still move the house cusps, and with them the house of the ruler.

Go beyond the name

After identifying the ruler, inspect its sign, house and aspects. “Venus is the ruler” is a starting point; the interpretation should explain how the actual chart factors of Venus are being used.

Where this becomes uncertain

The chart ruler depends on the Ascendant. If an uncertain birth time allows more than one rising sign, it may also allow different rulers. The rate at which the Ascendant moves depends on the place, the date and the sign rising, so there is no universal number of minutes that keeps the rising sign safe.

A house placement is time-sensitive too. Do not resolve that uncertainty by choosing whichever interpretation feels more familiar. If no time is entered, the moment used is an assumption, and the ruler derived from it is an assumption as well; see how to find your birth time.
