How to Read Your Natal Chart: A Step-by-Step Guide

This guide gives you an order for reading your own chart and shows each step on the same published chart, so you can see what the step looks like with real numbers. For each step you get three things: what to look at, how to read it, and the step done on the demonstration chart.

Step 1. The data: date, time and place

What to look at. The three inputs behind the chart and what was done with them: the date, the clock time and where it comes from, the place with its coordinates, and the timezone offset used to turn local time into Universal Time.

How to read it. The date settles the slow planets. The time settles the Moon to the degree and, together with the place, the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses. Check the offset before anything else: daylight saving time and historical timezone changes are a common reason why two charts of one birth disagree. The clock in Kyiv, Ukraine showed 18:30, the zone stood at UTC+3 on that date, so the moment of the chart is 15:30 UTC. Every position below follows from that one moment and that one point on the Earth.

Step 2. Elements and modalities

What to look at. Two tallies: how the bodies are spread over Fire, Earth, Air and Water, and over Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable signs. NatalChart.AI counts the 17 bodies and points of the chart, the Sun and the Moon twice and the others once, for 19 points. The Ascendant and the Midheaven are not counted.

How to read it. The elements are read as temperament and the modalities as a way of acting: Fire as initiative, Earth as practicality, Air as ideas and exchange, Water as feeling; Cardinal as starting, Fixed as sustaining, Mutable as adapting. A lead of a point or two is a tilt, not a type. Look at which bodies make the count before you read anything into it.

Fire leads the elements with 7 of 19 points and Water is lowest with 2. Fixed leads the modalities with 11, and Mutable has 2. Now look at where the count comes from: Leo holds six of the 17 bodies (Moon, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Chiron and Vesta), which is 7 points on its own, all of them Fire and Fixed. The tilt toward initiative and sustaining is worth reading, and so is the low count of Water, as something reached for deliberately and not as a defect. Step 3. Houses

What to look at. The Ascendant and the Midheaven first, then which of the twelve houses hold planets and which are empty.

How to read it. A sign says how a planet acts, and a house says in which area of life. Houses with several planets are where the chart concentrates, so start there. An empty house is not an empty area of life. It is read through its ruler, in the next step. Houses need the exact birth time. Houses, step by step takes this part slowly.

The seventh house holds six of the ten planets, so a reading of this chart begins with partnership and one-to-one relationships. The Sun at 13°33′ Virgo is in the seventh house: identity and direction, in a manner that is precise, modest and practical, worked out through partnership and one-to-one relationships. Houses 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 and 10 are empty.

Step 4. Rulers

What to look at. The planet that rules the sign on the Ascendant, called the chart ruler, and the rulers of the houses you care about. NatalChart.AI uses the modern rulers: Uranus for Aquarius, Neptune for Pisces and Pluto for Scorpio, with the classical rulers for the other nine signs.

How to read it. Follow the chain: the sign on the cusp, the planet that rules that sign, then the sign, the house and the aspects of that planet. The ruler carries the matters of its house to the place where it stands. This is how an empty house becomes readable. The chart ruler page compares the modern and the traditional tables.

On the demonstration chart. The Ascendant is in Aquarius, which is ruled by Uranus, so Uranus is the chart ruler. It stands at 9°54′ Capricorn in the eleventh house, retrograde: the approach to life shown by the Ascendant is read as directed toward friends, groups and hopes for the future. The tenth house is empty. Its cusp is at 9°54′ Sagittarius, Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, and Jupiter stands at 28°48′ Leo in the seventh house, so career, public role and reputation are read through Jupiter and through partnership and one-to-one relationships.

Step 5. Aspects

What to look at. The angles between the bodies. NatalChart.AI lists the five major aspects, each with its orb, the distance from the exact angle, and with its phase: applying while the orb is closing, separating once it is opening.

The five major aspects and the natal orbs

Why the orb is named: a square 0°30′ from exact and a square 7°30′ from exact are both called a square, and they are not the same thing. The closer one is far stronger, so each aspect here comes with its orb in degrees. How orbs work

The natal orbs are fixed at 8/6/8/8/8 in the order of the table, and minor aspects such as the quincunx or the semi-sextile are not listed. Another tool with wider orbs or more aspect types will show a longer list for the same birth, and both lists can be correct.

How to read it. Start with the two or three tightest aspects, because they describe a chart better than a long list of wide ones. An aspect that involves the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus or Mars says more about one person than an aspect between two slow planets, which everyone born in those years shares. Read the planets first and the aspect second: the planets say which two functions are linked, and the aspect says how.

The tightest is the trine between the Sun (identity and direction) and Neptune (imagination and longing), 0.55° from exact and applying. The two are read as flowing together with ease. With an orb this small it belongs in the first paragraph of any reading of this chart.

Step 6. The overall pattern

What to look at. What repeats: a sign or a house with several bodies, a planet that takes part in many aspects, a half of the chart that holds most of the planets.

How to read it. A theme that shows up in three independent ways, in the element count, in a house and in the aspects, is a headline. A single placement is a detail. Write down two or three headlines before you read any detail, and let the details fill them in.

So the headlines of this chart are Leo, the seventh house and Pluto. The placements in the other steps are read under those headlines, not next to them.

Step 7. Contradictions

What to look at. Factors that point in different directions: a Sun and a Moon in signs of different temperament, a planet with one easy and one hard aspect, a rising sign that says one thing next to a crowded house that says another.

How to read it. Do not average them, and do not pick the one you like. Each factor keeps its own territory: the planet says which part of the person is speaking, and the house says where. The tighter aspect speaks louder. A contradiction is often the most specific thing a chart says, because it names a tension the person actually lives with.

• The Sun is in Virgo (Earth, Mutable) and the Moon in Leo (Fire, Fixed). Direction and need speak differently here: precise, modest and practical on one side, warm, proud and expressive on the other. Both hold. The Sun describes what the person aims at, the Moon what they need in order to feel safe.
• Mars is trine Saturn (2.62°) and square Uranus (6.44°). One aspect says that drive and structure work together, the other that drive and change rub against each other. Both stay in the reading, and the trine, being tighter, speaks louder.
• The Ascendant in Aquarius is read as independence and a wider view, while six of the ten planets sit in the seventh house of partnership and one-to-one relationships. These are statements about different things, how the person meets the world and where most of the activity of the chart goes, so neither cancels the other.

Step 8. Checking the numbers

What to look at. The numbers under the reading: the longitudes of the bodies, the house cusps and the orbs.

How to read it. Compare them with an independent source set up the same way: tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, true node. A difference of a fraction of a degree points to the time or to rounding. This is checkable. We publish the intermediate values of a fixed test chart, planetary longitudes to four decimal places and all twelve house cusps, next to the same values from JPL Horizons, which NASA publishes and we do not control. A symbolic method, not a proven forecast

The eight steps describe. They do not predict. The positions in a chart are astronomy and can be checked. The meanings are a symbolic tradition: they have not been confirmed by controlled studies, and a chart does not cause or decide events.

Use a reading the way you would use a good question from a friend: to notice patterns, to name a tension, to think about a choice. It is not medical, legal or financial advice, and it is not a forecast of what will happen to you.
