The Ascendant sets the first house
The Ascendant is the degree of the zodiac that was crossing the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. The first house begins at that degree and runs to the cusp of the second house. In the Placidus system, which NatalChart.AI uses for all charts, the Ascendant and the first cusp are the same point.
The Earth turns once a day, so the whole zodiac rises in about 24 hours. On average that is one degree every four minutes, but the real rate depends on the latitude and on the sign that is rising: at the latitude of northern Europe some signs rise in under an hour and others take nearly three. Two people born on the same day in the same town, an hour apart, have nearly the same planets but a different Ascendant and a different first house, often in another sign.
That is why the first house depends entirely on the birth time. If the time is unknown, NatalChart.AI still calculates the planets, but the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses are undetermined. They are not roughly known: over a day each sign takes its turn on the horizon, so a guess stays a guess. What the first house covers
- How you come across: manner, style and the first impression.
- The body: appearance, physical presence and vitality.
- How you start things and meet new situations.
- The sense of being a separate person with a will of your own.
The sign on the Ascendant describes the manner, and planets in the house add their own note. In the API, NatalChart.AI gives the first house the theme “Identity & Self”. Like the rest of astrology, this is a symbolic language for self-reflection. It does not measure personality and it does not decide how a life goes.
Natural sign and ruler: Aries and Mars
In the natural zodiac the twelve houses are matched one to one with the twelve signs, starting from Aries. The first house matches Aries, a cardinal fire sign, and Mars, the ruler of Aries, is called its natural ruler. The match explains the themes of the house: beginnings, initiative, the body in action.
It is an analogy only. Your own first house starts in the sign of your Ascendant, and the planet to follow is the ruler of that sign, which is Mars only when Aries is rising.
Planets in the first house
A planet in the first house is read as part of the way a person comes across. The closer it stands to the Ascendant, the more prominent it is taken to be. One line for each of the ten planets:
- Sun in the first house. Identity sits on the surface: who the person is and how they come across are close to the same thing, and being seen matters.
- Moon in the first house. Feelings show at once in the face and the manner. The approach is responsive and protective, and it shifts with mood.
- Mercury in the first house. Meets the world by talking, asking and noticing. Comes across as quick, curious and often younger than their years.
- Venus in the first house. A pleasant, graceful first impression, with care for appearance and a habit of putting others at ease.
- Mars in the first house. Direct, energetic and quick to act. Physical drive is easy to see, and so is impatience.
- Jupiter in the first house. A large, confident, generous presence. Optimism opens doors, and enthusiasm can promise more than it delivers.
- Saturn in the first house. Reserved, serious and self-controlled. Responsibility is felt early, and ease with oneself tends to grow with age.
- Uranus in the first house. Independent, restless and hard to predict. The person is read as different and usually prefers it that way.
- Neptune in the first house. A soft, impressionable presence that is hard to pin down. Others tend to see in the person what they hope to see.
- Pluto in the first house. Intense, private and controlled. A strong first impression, and a recurring theme of remaking oneself.
These are reading conventions, not measured traits. The sign of the planet, its aspects and its distance from the Ascendant change the picture, so read the line together with the rest of the chart. The empty first house
An empty first house is common: there are twelve houses and ten planets, and the planets are often bunched together. It does not mean a weak identity, and it does not mean that nothing happens there. Read it in two steps.
- First, the sign on the Ascendant. It describes the manner. The degree matters too, because it tells you how close the Ascendant is to the next sign.
- Then the chart ruler. Take the planet that rules the Ascendant sign and look at its sign, its house and its aspects. They show where the approach to life is directed and what it has to work with.

How wide the first house is in Placidus
In Placidus the first house runs from the Ascendant to the second cusp, and its width in degrees of the zodiac is not fixed. Near the equator it stays close to 30°. The further from the equator, the more it depends on the sign that is rising.
North of the equator the signs from Capricorn to Gemini rise quickly, Pisces and Aries fastest of all. With one of them on the Ascendant a long stretch of the zodiac comes up in a short time, and the first house is wide, often wide enough to hold a whole sign that has no cusp of its own, called an intercepted sign. The signs from Cancer to Sagittarius rise slowly, and with one of them on the Ascendant the first house is narrow. South of the equator the two groups change places.
Inside the polar circles, beyond about 66.5° of latitude, some degrees of the zodiac never rise or set, and the Placidus division cannot be completed there.
- A wide first house takes in more of the zodiac, so a planet is more likely to fall in it, and a transiting planet spends longer there.
- It can include two or three signs. The sign on the Ascendant still sets the manner, and the chart ruler is still the ruler of that sign.
- The width is geometry. It does not make the first house stronger or weaker.
- Another house system draws the boundaries differently, so the same planet can change house while its zodiac position stays the same. See Placidus and Whole Sign compared.

Why the orb is named: a square 0°30′ from exact and a square 7°30′ from exact are both called a square, and they are not the same thing. The closer one is far stronger, so each aspect here comes with its orb in degrees. How orbs work

The Ascendant of the demonstration chart is at 14°59′ Aquarius, and the first house starts there. The second cusp is at 13°45′ Aries, which makes the first house 58.76° wide, well over the 30° an equal division would give. It takes in 15.01° of Aquarius, all 30° of Pisces and 13.75° of Aries. The birthplace lies at 50.4501° N, where Aquarius is one of the fast-rising signs, and the width follows from that. Pisces lies wholly inside the house with no cusp of its own, so it is intercepted.
None of the 17 bodies falls between those two cusps, so the first house is empty and the reading goes to the chart ruler. The Ascendant in Aquarius is conventionally read as independence and a wider view. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus in the table the site uses, and by Saturn in the traditional one. Uranus stands at 9°54′ Capricorn in the eleventh house, retrograde, so that manner is read as directed toward the matters of the eleventh house: friends, groups and hopes for the future.
Among the ten planets, the closest aspect to Uranus is a trine with the Sun, with an orb of 3.64°, separating. A reader who follows the traditional rulers would look at Saturn instead, at 0°51′ Aquarius in the twelfth house. The positions are the same either way. Which ruler to follow is a convention, and a reading should say which one it uses.

Questions
Is the first house the same as the rising sign?
Not quite. The rising sign is the sign that holds the Ascendant. The first house is the sector that starts at the Ascendant degree and runs to the second cusp. In Placidus it often reaches into the next sign, and at higher latitudes it can take in a whole further sign.
What does an empty first house mean?
Only that no planet stood in that sector when you were born, which is common with twelve houses and ten planets. Identity is not missing. Read the sign on the Ascendant, then the planet that rules that sign: its sign, house and aspects describe how the first house works in your chart.
Which planet rules the first house?
In your own chart it is the planet that rules the sign on your Ascendant, called the chart ruler. Mars is the natural ruler of the first house only by analogy with Aries, the first sign. NatalChart.AI uses the modern rulers: Uranus for Aquarius, Neptune for Pisces and Pluto for Scorpio.
Can I know my first house without a birth time?
No. The Ascendant passes through the whole zodiac in a day, so without an exact time the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses are undetermined, not approximate. The planets and their signs are still calculated.
Why is my first house much wider than 30 degrees?
Placidus houses are equal in time, not in degrees of the zodiac. Away from the equator some signs rise much faster than others, and when a fast-rising sign is on the Ascendant a long stretch of the zodiac falls into the first house. The width is geometry. It does not make the house stronger or weaker.
